This is an incredibly popular pattern because the Rag Time Quilt is so easy to make. One of my friends' aunts made one for her as a wedding gift, and all my friends (ages 25-35) love it because it's so cozy.
The quilt is made by making a series of miniature one-square "quiltlets" and then sewing them together with the seam on the outside. The directions in the pattern are short but clear, and the most time consuming part of the process is snipping the seams at the end, before the quilt gets washed.
I like it because it's a great beginner quilt - kids as young as twelve or thirteen have made it out of fabrics like yarn-dyed brushed cotton (homespun), plaid flannel, and denim. The quilt turns out completely differently depending on whether you decided to use blue and red material, classic dark plaids, or bright Easter Egg colours. You have a choice about using 9 or 18 different fabrics, and I really like the mix-and-match scrappy look that results. The cost of the material for this lap-sized quilt is approximately $190 (includes both front and back material), with about an additional $20 for batting.
